In 1999, I wrote an op-ed titled “Drillo Killed the Joy,” which was published in the Norwegian newspaper, Verdens Gang. This op-ed eventually became informally known as “The Manifesto of Indoor Football.” On the same day the article was published, a young man from Eastern Norway called me. He said he had been moved when he read what I had written. His father had become excited – so thrilled, in fact, that he had made 50 copies of the article at work, intended for family and friends. Why had he done it? Because he was desperate about his son’s situation. The football virtuoso had been rejected in favor of players who fit into the system – players who, in terms of skill, didn’t come close to his son’s level.
